We had a client in Ankeny, IA, reach out to our team looking to create a charming outdoor living space where they could spend time. To get an idea of their expectations, we met with them for a consultation. We discussed their goals and the elements they wanted to incorporate, which included a patio behind their house with new landscaping. Once we planned out the design, we got to work bringing it to fruition! We built a rectangular patio using two types of pavers to create an eye-catching checkerboard pattern. After that, we installed landscape beds along the house, filling them with small plants and rocks to bring pops of greenery to the space. With everything complete, the result is a well-thought-out outdoor area they can enjoy for years to come.

A Consultation to Discuss Our Client's Goals Was the First Step of This Outdoor Living Project

The first step of this outdoor living project was a consultation to discuss our client's goals. During this initial meeting, they shared their budget and expectations for this space, which involved a patio and new landscaping. They wanted a simpler design to create a charming setting for spending time outside, but with some flair. So, we worked with them to choose materials for their patio that would upgrade its aesthetic, as well as the plants and ground cover for their new landscape beds. Once everything was planned and the design was approved, we moved forward with the installations!

A Paver Patio With a Unique Pattern Was Installed in Their Backyard

Paver patio in Ankeny, IA, with a checkerboard pattern and plants.

The patio was the main element of this backyard upgrade, so we installed it first. We built a rectangular patio that spans the length of the house, connecting it to the steps leading to the back entrance for easy access. We used larger, square paving stones with a light color and smaller, darker-colored pavers to go in between them, creating a checkerboard pattern. This eye-catching design adds visual interest to the patio while maintaining a modern, charming aesthetic.

Pavers are renowned for their durability and limitless design options, including patterns like herringbone, running bond, checkerboard, and more!

We Completed This Project With New Landscape Beds Filled With Plants & Rocks

Once the patio was installed, we completed this project with new landscape beds! These beds were added along the house, which bordered the patio to define the newly transformed space even further. Then, we installed hydrangeas on either side of their back steps, as well as other small, charming plants throughout, to add pops of greenery. As a finishing touch, we laid river rocks for the ground cover to achieve a sleek, refined look. Now our client has an outdoor living space tailored to their needs, with its simple yet striking design matching their house perfectly while creating an inviting and cohesive feel.
